Elgin man charged with burglarizing church

An Elgin man has been charged with burglary and theft after taking items from a church last week, according to police.

Daniel Wells, 43, of the 300 block of DuPage Street, was charged Wednesday with one felony count of burglary to a house of worship, one felony count of theft to a house of worship and one misdemeanor count of theft.

According to police, Wells walked in a side entrance of St. Joseph Catholic Church, 270 Division St., on Jan. 14 and forcibly removed a pair of brass holy water fonts from a wall at the church’s main entrance. Police said the fonts were worth $1,000.

Wells then went to a local recycling facility and sold the fonts for cash, police said.

On Wednesday night, Wells was being held at the Elgin Police Department to await a bond hearing.
