Spring into opportunity with year-round internship in financial services

January is not only a time when students return to classes, they also set their sights on summer and the internship they would like to secure.

With Northwestern Mutual McTigue Financial Group's year-round financial services internship students don't have to wait until summer.

“A rolling start to our internship program means students can get started throughout the year,” explains Theresa Taylor, director of internship development.

While summer internships are popular, Taylor says, Northwestern Mutual's year-round internship provides college students with far more than a single semester or summer break to build a solid foundation of knowledge in the financial services industry – and often converts students from college representatives to financial representatives. On average, 1 out of 3 former interns converts to a full-time representative contract upon graduation.

The McTigue Financial Group plans to offer 5 students an opportunity to test drive the financial services career in 2013 working from their office located at 650 Dundee Road in Northbrook. “Our internship has been highly rated due to its mentorship and career advancement opportunities, intern involvement, resume enhancement and the opportunity to work within one of Northwestern Mutual's top network offices,” adds Taylor. Training classes are offered in March, May, June, September and December. Students generally work 15 to 20 hours per week during the school year and at least 40 hours per week in the summer.

For college students interested in learning more about year-round internships, Taylor offers these tips:

1. Start with your college career center. They can provide you with a list of possible year-round internships, applications dates, and other sources of information.

2. Go online and conduct your own research. Vault.com is a popular website for internship advice. You can learn about the Top 10 internships and view video profiles. You will find the Northwestern Mutual financial representative internship program among the top 10 programs.

3. Attend career and internship fairs on your college campus. The McTigue Financial Group regularly participates in career and internship fairs at Chicago area colleges and universities. To view an up-to-date schedule, visit our internship page at www.mctiguefinancial.com.

The Northwestern Mutual internship program was launched in 1967, and offers both hands-on training and real-life experience. Many of the company's most successful financial representatives and nearly half of its senior field management are former interns.
