Song’s words should inspire our leaders

New members of Congress have been sworn in, and Barack Obama has been inaugurated. Now is the perfect time for all of them to read, really read, the words of “American the Beautiful,” especially the third verse, which goes like this: “O beautiful for heroes proved in liberating strife, who more than self their country loved, and mercy more than life! America! America! May God thy gold refine, ‘til all success be nobleness, and every gain divine.”
