Grudging support for KIVA annexation

Twenty-five years ago I formed a dynamic group of concerned Kane County citizens to oppose high density residential developments in the rural areas. We proactively confronted private developers who in our opinion were operating in concert with various Kane County politicians and departments to systematically circumvent the will of the people in their subdivision densities and long term planning. We have had some significant success, and the battles go on.

Today, the creation of the village of Campton Hills symbolizes the culmination of decades of hand work and sacrifice by the citizens of rural Kane to take charge of their own lives. The village founders and their supporters fought the county political hierarchy and well-connected wealthy developers and beat them all. It was a phenomenal accomplishment.

The question of annexing the Glenwood School property is now before trustees. Inherent in this action would be acceptance of the KIVA rehab facility. There is clear evidence the majority of the residents oppose KIVA, so now trustees must decide if they will support the will of the people or choose to impose their own perceived superior wisdom and allow it. My heart is with the will of the people. If trustees vote otherwise they could be accused of the same heavy-handed politics and special interest pressures they fought, and which were a major catalyst in the formation of the village.

It is a very difficult and emotional decision. However, the reality is this: If Campton Hills does not annex KIVA who will? The alternatives could be far worse, so it is essential that the village control this property and the integrity of its’ borders. Therefore, annex it now, get it on the tax rolls, and deal with KIVA later with strict village oversight.
