St. Charles East boys basketball players and the cheerleaders are pairing up to raise money for cancer research.
Since October, the cheerleaders and basketball players have been soliciting the community for an opportunity to do community service in return for a donation to the “Hoops for Hope” fundraiser.
One cheerleader, for example, is baby-sitting for her neighbor, who in return is donating $25 to “Hoops for Hope.” This event is a win-win for the community and the cause, and gives the students an opportunity to get involved.
If you have an activity where you could use help from the St. Charles East basketball players, call Jill Aducci at (630) 335-9355.
“Hoops for Hope” T-shirts will be available for $10 at home games prior to the Hoops for Hope charity event Saturday, Feb. 9, at the basketball game when St. Charles East faces Batavia.
Each cheerleader and player will announce at the varsity and sophomore games for whom they are dedicating their game, including a list of those touched by cancer.
A “Chain of Hope” will be rolled out at halftime. Each link in the chain will honor a person who suffered with cancer. All students are encouraged to purchase a link during the week prior to the game. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Jimmy V Foundation for cancer research.
At the game, a two-minute video featuring the famous college basketball coach Jimmy Valvano (hence the “V” Foundation, recipient of a portion of the money raised) will be played. The V Foundation raises money for cancer research. Raffle tickets for prizes, including an iPad mini and flat-screen television, will be sold during the games.
Also, Jersey Mike’s of St. Charles is donating $1 to the Hoops for Hope charity event for each regular sized sub, purchased Feb. 4-8. Students, parents, friends and neighbors are encouraged to stop by Jersey Mike’s to support the cause.
“Hoops for Hope” is a coming together of the students from both St. Charles East and Batavia, as well as boys from the basketball teams and girls from cheerleading for a good cause.Copyright © 2013 Paddock Publications, Inc. All rights reserved.
