Abortion a personal choice for women

I was just reading Arlene Sawicki’s “right to life” rant, which was full of untruths. It moved me to send another donation to Planned Parenthood.

For those who didn’t know about the abortion plank people like Arlene had installed in the Republican platform last summer, it was very rigid. In short, it outlawed abortion in all cases. This included rape, incest or even to save the life of the woman.

How can people who approved a party position like that call themselves “pro-life”? These people believe that a fertilized human egg has supreme rights which trump a woman’s physical and mental agony from rape, incest or even a pregnancy that endangers her life.

What would these “pro-life” people say to the widower husband of a woman who could not legally terminate a pregnancy in order to save her life? And what would they say to the children of such a woman who were now to grow up without a mother?

“Right to life” people are very zealous in their beliefs. They feel that if only they could explain their viewpoint properly and convincingly enough, then other people’s minds would suddenly “flip” to accepting their point of view. They are wrong.

Other folks (especially women) have thought long and hard about this issue. And most do not want to have other people legislate what should remain a personal medical choice. Also, to get factual, scientific information — Google “Guttmacher Institute.”
