Des Plaines mayoral, aldermanic candidates face objections

Two Des Plaines residents have filed objections to the candidate petitions of mayoral hopeful Mark Walsten and 5th Ward aldermanic challenger Gregory Sarlo in the April municipal elections.

Carl Mauter-Hollenbeck filed the objection to Walsten’s candidacy, while Brian Burkross filed the objection to Sarlo’s petition.

Thursday was the last day to file objections for the April elections.

A Des Plaines electoral board hearing date has not yet been set. The city’s legal counsel is expected to finalize a date by next week, City Clerk Gloria Ludwig said.

Walsten said Friday he does not know his objector, whose 60-page filing questioned whether signatures on Walsten’s candidate petition were genuine and of registered voters, among other objections.

“I got well over 1,000 signatures,” Walsten said. “We submitted 676, which was the maximum. The minimum I believe was 476 signatures. I’m not concerned. We’ll see what happens. We went through everything so we’re pretty confident.”

Three hopefuls are vying for the mayoral post, including 3rd Ward Alderman Matt Bogusz and former Des Plaines mayor Tony Arredia.

Sarlo is challenging one-term Alderman Jim Brookman in the 5th Ward.

In other races, Patricia Haugeberg is running for re-election in the 1st Ward against challengers Robert Giurato and Steven Mokry.

With no incumbent in the 3rd Ward, the race is between Denise Rodd and former 1st Ward alderwoman Patricia Beauvais.

In the 7th Ward, John Malloy and Joanna Sojka are vying for the seat held by Alderman Dan Wilson, who is not running for re-election. Eric Leys, a current Maine Township High School District 207 school board member, dropped out of the 7th Ward race shortly after announcing his candidacy.
