Des Plaines hosts electronics recycling

The Des Plaines public works department is accepting computer components, phone equipment, handheld electronics, DVDs, VCRs, and televisions for recycling from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. every Wednesday at the Public Works Garage, 1111 Joseph J. Schwab (Campground) Road. The city’s contracted recycling company will wipe all computer hard drives to the National Institute of Standards & Technology standards. Computers that meet requirements are then refurbished while unusable equipment is recycled responsibly in accordance with the Illinois Electronics Reuse & Recycling Act. Landfill disposal of many electronic items has been banned since Jan. 1, 2012. Items will only be accepted during the designated times, and household appliances will not be accepted.
