Water main break closes part of Route 31 in Elgin

All four lanes on Route 31 between Wing Street and Big Timber Road in Elgin were closed for about four hours Thursday while public works staff repaired a water main break, officials said.

The break was reported about 9:15 a.m., south of Frazier Avenue, Police Cmdr. Glenn Theriault said. By then, he said, there was “a significant amount of water on the road.”

The road reopened shortly after 2 p.m., Theriault said.

The break is in the vicinity of the last significant water main break that took place on Route 31 in October 2011, he said.

Theriault said public works officials told him the two incidents are unrelated.

“That was a 6-inch main line, this is a 10-inch main,” he said. “It’s two totally different pipes. It’s just coincidental.”
