Hoffman Estates employee named ‘Code Enforcement Officer of the Year’

A Hoffman Estates employee has been named the state’s 2012 Code Enforcement Officer of the Year.

Betty Melligan was given the honor by the Illinois Association of Code Enforcement during the association’s quarterly meeting Dec. 5 at Elgin Community College.

The IACE provides education, training and certifications to code enforcement officials in an effort to promote professionalism.

Melligan, who has worked in the village’s code enforcement department for almost 12 years, was recognized for her outstanding public service as a property maintenance inspector.

“I’m very humbled,” she said. “I really love my job, I love working with the village and I love trying to help people.”

During her time working in the code enforcement department, Melligan has obtained several certifications related to property maintenance and attended continuing education classes to stay informed on codes adopted by the village board. She’s also an active member of the IACE board of directors.

Prior to taking a job with the village, Melligan worked for the Hoffman Estates Park District for 15 years.
