Voters don’t have say in corporate welfare

Rarely do I find such a degree of contradiction, hypocrisy and irony as in the Dec 13 issue of the Daily Herald.

On Page 1, Village of Libertyville’s political class is using its official stand of prudence with taxpayers’ money by maneuvering over wording of language on the ballot to fund Brainerd Community Center. The center is to serve local population in a variety of ways that goes beyond mere dollars and cents.

On Page 3, there is a mention of “economic inducement” that Mariano Fresh Market’s developer Bradford Real Estate Cos. will receive from Lake Zurich and Vernon Hills ($2 million and $1.5 million, respectively).

In all of these cases, the money spent on corporate welfare could have been put to a much better use, so the question remains as follows: was this decision put on a ballot in any way, shape or form for taxpayers to decide?
