Three students injured in Palatine bus crash

A bus carrying Winston Campus Junior High students collided with a pickup truck Tuesday afternoon in Palatine, injuring four people total.

Twenty-five seventh- and eighth-grade students were riding home from extracurricular activities when their school bus crashed near North Frontage Road and Bayside Drive about 4:15 p.m.

“There was significant damage to both the truck and bus,” Superintendent Scott Thompson said. “This was an activity bus for kids who stayed after school for extracurricular activities.”

Per district policy, a Palatine Township Elementary District 15 administrator and school nurse responded to the scene, as well as police and fire personnel. Three students experienced whiplash-like injuries and were taken to hospitals — two to Alexian Brothers in Elk Grove Village and another to Northwest Memorial Hospital.

The driver of the pickup, who needed help from the Palatine Fire Department to open the door, was also taken to a nearby hospital.

“The rest of the children were released to school officials,” said Palatine Fire Chief Randy Dowell. “They were loaded onto a second bus and taken back to the school. Parents picked them up from there.”
