Three charged in Waukegan man’s shooting death

Three Waukegan men have been charged with first-degree murder after the intended victim of a robbery was shot and killed at his Waukegan apartment, authorities said Saturday.

Steven Gee, 21, Anthony Brito, 20, and Armando Sanders, 19, are each being held on a murder charge in lieu of a $1 million bond after 46-year-old Randy Hardy was killed Thursday evening at an apartment complex on the 1600 block of Berwick Boulevard, according to Cmdr. Gabe Guzman of the Waukegan Police Department.

Police say Gee, Brito and Sanders entered the apartment complex and knocked on Hardy’s door, but when he opened it, one of the men pulled a gun on him. Hardy struggled with the gunman as one shot was fired into the ceiling, police said. The fight continued in a hallway outside Hardy’s front door, where Hardy was shot at least three times, according to police.

An autopsy performed Friday afternoon determined Hardy suffered four gunshot wounds to the chest, head and torso, according to Lake County Coroner Thomas Rudd. Numerous apartment complex residents heard the gunshots and spoke to police.

After the shooting, police said Gee, Brito and Sanders fled through a park next to Clearbrook Elementary School. They soon were arrested, and investigators recovered a handgun wedged underneath a trash bin as well as a pair of latex gloves and a hooded sweatshirt at least one of the offenders was wearing, according to police.

A child and a woman identified as Hardy’s girlfriend or common-law wife were in the apartment at time of the shooting, but they were unharmed, Guzman said.
