Elgin’s Middleby expands operations in Australia

Elgin-based The Middleby Corp., maker of ovens for Papa John’s and Domino’s Pizza restaurants, announced Friday that it is expanding its operations into Australia.

Middleby Australia will feature a full-service office in Brisbane and will serve the markets of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific islands, the company said in a release. A full sales team, customer service, logistics, parts and service and a complete test kitchen will all be included in the new operation. Middleby Australia will also have a warehouse in Sydney to house a full inventory of equipment and parts.

The expansion was made possible due to the strong mining industry, the growing Australian economy and the demand for the Middleby brand in the expanding food service sector of the region, according to the release.

Middleby, the global leader in the food service equipment industry, now has a presence on five continents, including distribution centers in the United States, China, The Philippines, United Kingdom, Mexico, Spain and Switzerland.

Selim Bassoul serves as chairman and CEO for the company that was recently named to the Forbes Magazine annual America’s Best Small Companies list for the ninth consecutive year. The company made the list with a ranking of 25th overall and was the top-ranking company from Illinois.

Douglas Dunn, vice president and general manager of Middleby Worldwide, will head the leadership team in the launch of Middleby Australia as managing director.

“With our two large warehouses and in-house service team we are positioned to serve our customers in the region better than ever before,” Dunn said. General Manager Paul Gummerson and Sales Director Brandon Clark will join Dunn on the leadership team.

The company develops, manufactures, markets and services a broad line of equipment used for commercial food cooking. A few of the leading equipment brands serving the commercial food service industry include Anets, Beech, Lang, Star and Wells.
