Higher taxes should be no surprise

As reported in the Daily Herald, the Illinois legislature currently is considering shifting some of the state's future teacher retirement costs to the local school districts. The result of which will be even higher property taxes.

This an entirely appropriate and expected response to the excessive teacher contracts and retirement packages that many local school districts have been so cavalierly approving over the past couple of decades.

As long as only 20 percent of taxpayers come out to vote for school board candidates, communities will continue to experience generous teacher contracts and retirement packages, and higher property taxes.

As Newton said, "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction."
