Crystal Lake cyclist dies after hitting moving car

A 57-year-old Crystal Lake man died from injuries he sustained after his bicycle struck the side of a car Monday evening.

An autopsy Tuesday morning determined Gordon McClain died of chest injuries.

McClain was riding his bike on Route 14 east of Route 31 at about 5:45 p.m. when he attempted to cross the road and struck the drivers’ side door of a 2012 Nissan Murano driven by Digna Campanano, 48, of Aurora, who was traveling east.

“There’s nothing suspicious about the bike rider or the driver,” Crystal Lake Police Commander Derek Hyrkas said. “It just seems like an unfortunate accident.”

McClain was pronounced dead at the scene.

Traffic was diverted around the crash for three hours Monday evening, and no citations were issued.

Police said they’re unsure why McClain was attempting to cross the road in an area where there was no intersection.

“There’s no stoplight or crosswalk where he was crossing,” Hyrkas said. “It’s just a four-lane highway — two lanes east and two westbound.”

The accident remains under investigation.

No funeral arrangements have been made for McClain at this time.
