Nominate a family for home heating makeover

Submitted by Confident Aire Inc.

Every year, Tom Wangler and his team at Confident Aire Inc. in Batavia help out a family with a home heating makeover.

This will be his sixth year, and they are currently seeking nominations for deserving area families in the form of a new energy-efficient furnace, along with the appropriate and necessary home improvements.

According to Wangler, over the past five years, he and his team have contributed about $40,000 in materials and labor to worthy families.

Once again, area churches, nonprofits and current clients are invited to submit a nomination package to Confident Aire and one eligible household will be selected Friday, Dec. 28.

Batavia Mayor Jeffery D. Schielke will have the honor of drawing the winning family’s name from all eligible submissions. All runners-up will receive a free safety inspection of their furnace. Wangler expects to commence work in January, according to the winner’s schedule.

Services in the energy makeover may include: indoor air quality analysis; blower door infiltration test; professional load calculation; thorough duct cleaning; seal ductwork; install new high-efficient furnace, donated by Trane and Munch Supply; install air filtration system; and anything else the recipients need for health and efficiency.

As usual, it is likely there will be no shortage of qualified nominees for this year’s Ultimate Energy Transformation.

“There is still a great deal of uncertainty in the economy,” says Wangler. “I am pleased that at least one area family will benefit from our efforts with a more energy-efficient furnace, which will save them money in energy costs, plus benefit their family’s health.”

Last year’s recipient is one example of the stories that emerge from this annual effort.

A contractor condemned the furnace of a single mom because it had a “cracked heat exchanger.” The distraught woman couldn’t afford to replace it. When the Salvation Army learned of her plight, they nominated her for the Ultimate Energy Transformation, which she later won.

Once the unit was removed, Confident Aire found nothing wrong with the furnace. However, it was old and inefficient, so the new furnace was a welcomed help to her budget. More importantly, as Wangler’s team inspected other appliances, they found a plugged dryer vent. A large amount of lint had already built up in the wall where the dryer hose was broken.

“Why it never ignited is beyond me,” said Wangler. “I guess she was just being watched after.”
