School safety officer pleads not guilty to sexual assault

A security guard at Waukegan High School’s Brookside Campus pleaded not guilty in court Thursday to charges he had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student.

Timothy Kinsey, 44, of the 1600 block of 11th Street in Waukegan, was charged Oct. 10 with two counts of criminal sexual assault. If found guilty of the charges, Kinsey could spend up to 15 years behind bars, prosecutors said Thursday.

Kinsey was accused and eventually charged in connection with an alleged domestic dispute involving another female, authorities said. However, when officers arrested Kinsey at the high school, he gave a voluntary statement admitting to the sexual relationship with the 17-year-old student, authorities said.

School officials said no other students were involved, and Kinsey has been placed on administrative leave.

Kinsey remains in Lake County jail on $100,000 bond. He is due back in court Dec. 3.
