Roskam will give us more of the same

I’m disappointed in the Daily Herald’s endorsement of Peter Roskam over Leslie Coolidge in the 6th Congressional District race. With Congress receiving approval ratings that border on negligible, it is hard to justify sending any incumbent back, especially those in leadership positions. You stress the need for bipartisan efforts, which he lacks, and you support the Affordable Health Care Act, which he opposes. You also criticize him for his lack of focus on social issues and state he is in a position to fix the economic mess, yet this mess occurred on his watch. It is less expensive and traumatic to prevent a crisis then recover from one, and Roskam’s policies in this regard offer nothing that builds any confidence that we won’t repeat the past.

With these serious differences, you give him an endorsement. I believe we would agree we need to populate Congress with smart and independent-thinking individuals to begin to change the character and performance of the worse Congress in history. Smart and independent perfectly describe Ms. Coolidge. We need to change Congress to an enterprise that represent constituents’ needs over the dictates of special interest groups and backward-thinking party ideology. With Peter Roskam we know exactly what to expect, namely more of the same, and I cannot find anyone who endorses this.
