Addison police shoot, kill man who fired at officers

A man shot by Addison police after he fired on them has died, authorities said Tuesday.

George R. Scoville, 47, was killed after he fired his weapon numerous times at officers and deputies who were investigating a hit-and-run crash, police said; he was taken to GlenOaks Hospital in Glendale Heights, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said officers went to a house on the 20W300 block of Belmont Place in an unincorporated area near Addison about 6:30 p.m. Monday to investigate the hit-and-run, which happened at Lake Street and Lombard Road about an hour earlier.

Scoville fired at an investigating officer from the house and retreated back inside, authorities said. Police then set up a perimeter and evacuated residents in the area.

When Scoville left the house again, he fired his weapon several times and officers returned fire, police said.

The shooting happened about a half-mile from Addison Trail High School, which was evacuated. No students or staff members were harmed, officials said.

The DuPage County Major Crimes Task Force is investigating the shooting.
