Elgin man sentenced to two years for killing dog

An Elgin man who killed his roommate’s Chihuahua by throwing it against a wall was sentenced to two years in prison Wednesday.

Oscar Guerrero, 20, was drinking at a house he shared with a roommate on the 500 block a Lavoie Avenue and when his roommate refused to go into the basement to take some photos, he grabbed the dog by the neck and threw it at a wall, police said.

Police said Guerrero grabbed the dog off a nearby couch when he killed it in May.

Guerrero had already served 137 days in jail when he was sentenced Wednesday, and was credited for those days, according to court records.

He accepted a guilty plea deal on the animal cruelty charge and was also forced to pay a $625 fine, according to court records.
