Cat saved, birds die in Buffalo Grove house fire

Seven birds died in a fire inside a Buffalo Grove home Thursday night, but firefighters were able to rescue the family’s cat.

A passer-by spotted smoke coming from a house on the 600 block of White Pine Road and called 911 about 7:15 p.m.

The first firefighters on the scene saw smoke coming from the roofline and eventually found the fire in a back bedroom, said Buffalo Grove Batallion Chief Shawn Collins.

During the blaze, firefighters rescued the cat from the home and fitted the animal with an oxygen mask. Buffalo Grove police took the cat to a vet clinic.

“The cat’s going to make it,” Collins said.

Firefighters contained the blaze to the bedroom where it started, but the rest of the home sustained smoke damage.

The fire damage to the bedroom was significant, according to Collins.

No one was home when the fire broke out, and there were no reported injuries to any firefighters.

The cause of the fire remained undetermined late Thursday night, and a damage estimate was not available.
