Schaumburg motorcycle accident victim identified

The identity of a 37-year-old Elk Grove Village man killed Friday afternoon in a fiery motorcycle wreck in Schaumburg was released Saturday morning.

Mariusz Zajac was killed when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a van at 4:53 p.m. at the corner of Meacham and Old Schaumburg roads, causing the bike to go up in flames, according to Schaumburg police.

Zajac was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said preliminary information suggests Zajac was traveling on northbound Meacham and struck the right side of the passenger van, which was turning from southbound Meacham to eastbound Old Schaumburg.

The van was driven by a 21-year-old Chicago man. He and an adult female passenger from Chicago were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

No citations were issued.

The accident is still under investigation.

Police said Friday night they would look into all possible factors of the crash, including speed and whether traffic lights were obeyed.

Both directions of Meacham were shut down from Schaumburg to Old Schaumburg until 8:45 p.m. during the accident investigation.

Witnesses to the crash were asked to contact police at (847) 882-3534.
