East Dundee still considering video gambling

The video gambling discussion is not over in East Dundee.

While the village board decided earlier this month not to redo a 2010 referendum in which residents voted to ban video gambling, members discussed the matter again Monday.

Area business owners collected 650 signatures in support of putting a question on the November ballot as part of a binding referendum. Village Administrator Bob Skurla said he accidentally passed along incorrect deadline information to the group, which did not submit signatures in time to get the question on the ballot. Impressed with the public support for the referendum and feeling bad about the incorrect information he passed along, Skurla said he would ask the board to take a second look at the proposal.

Owners of some of the 10 businesses that could apply for the video gambling machines from the state attended the board’s meeting Monday. But village board members decided to hold off on another discussion of the gambling issue until their Sept. 11 committee of the whole meeting.

In the meantime they will talk to community members and gauge public support before revisiting the topic as a group.
