Mayors might end up eating crow

We are struck by how orderly and enthusiastic the crowds are that line up to show their support for the stand Dan Cathy, the CEO of Chick-fil-A, has taken.

We are likewise shocked that the mayors of several of our largest cities, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco, are quick to condemn Cathy, even while the huge crowds seem to demonstrate that the mayors’ views are not shared by citizens. They all seem to have suddenly acquired a new taste, and like the cows on the roadside ads plead, they are ready to “Eat Mor Chikin.”

These mayors seem to ignore several issues. The First Amendment to our Constitution guarantees the right to free speech. Yet, because CEO Cathy holds the traditional Christian view of marriage, which these mayors don’t accept as politically correct, are ready to launch all vast resources at their disposal — the vast powers of the law, the police, the power to tax, and the power to give or withhold business permits.

The Daily Herald is reporting that Chicago Alderman Proco “Joe” Moreno is already trying to use his position to prevent construction of a new Chick-fil-A in Logan Square, a move supported by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. If some of these mayors aren’t careful, they might need to develop a taste for crow.
