Beach Bums walk all over Boomers

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — The Schaumburg Boomers’ pitchers issued 8 walks and hit a pair of batters, helping the host Traverse City Beach Bums post a 6-1 victory Friday night in the opener of a three-game series.

Steve McQuail blasted his 15th homer of the season in the top of the second the opposite way to right against a strong wind that staked the Boomers (43-33) to a 1-0 lead.

Cameron Roth started for the Boomers and took the loss in 5 innings. Roth, who walked five and hit a batter, issued a bases-loaded pass to Kyle Eveland to force home the tying run in the fourth.

A pair of doubles helped the Bums grab a 3-1 lead in the fifth, but Roth struck out three consecutive batters to leave a pair of runners in scoring position.

The Bums added a run in the seventh on 3 straight walks with two outs to force home a run. The Boomers allowed 2 unearned runs in the eighth.

The series continues at 6:05 p.m. today when Boomers right-hander Alex Rivers (2-2, 5.18) faces righty Scott Dunn (4-3, 3.38).
