Boomers handcuff the Freedom

FLORENCE, Ky. — The Schaumburg Boomers captured the season series from Florence by holding off the host Freedom 6-4 on Wednesday night.

The Boomers (41-27) needed just three batters to take the lead. Karexon Sanchez led off with a walk and was sacrificed to second before scoring on a double from Frank Pfister.

The Boomers tacked on 2 more runs in the second to open a 3-0 lead against Freedom starter Sean Gregory (6-6), who suffered the loss in 7 innings of work. Sanchez delivered a two-out, 2-run double to center.

The early 3-run advantage was more than enough for victorious Cody Griebling (3-1), who recorded his fourth quality start in as many appearances by going 7 innings. The rookie has worked into the seventh inning in every start this year. Griebling allowed single runs in the second and third.

The Boomers’ Mike Valadez drilled an RBI single in the sixth and Steve McQuail belted his 12th homer of the year, a 2-run blast in the seventh.

The Freedom (36-32) scored twice in the ninth and brought the tying run to the plate, but Adam Tollefson recorded back-to-back strikeouts to close the win.
