Boy in car surfing accident in stable condition

A Pingree Grove teenager injured in a car surfing accident Monday night is in stable condition with head and leg injuries, Pingree Grove Police Chief Carol Lussky said.

The 13-year-old, who has not been identified, suffered head injuries and a crushed ankle after he was thrown from the hood of 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier. The teen was then accidentally hit by his 16-year-old brother, who was driving the car.

Police said the accident happened around 9 p.m. on the 1800 block of Lake Bluff Lane. The 16-year-old boy was driving a family member’s vehicle as the younger brother lay across the hood, police said. The driver braked sharply causing the 13-year-old boy to slide off the hood, hitting his head on the ground. The car then came to a rest of his chest. The driver then reversed the vehicle to help his brother and flagged down a passer-by to call 911.

“He is stable,” Lussky said Wednesday. “He is hanging in there.”

Charges are pending, Lussky said, but the police department is waiting a couple of days to find out the status of the younger boy.

“Those are things that are still pending,” Lussky said. “At the minimum he is an unlicensed driver. But we don’t need to take action until we know where we stand with the brother’s stability.”

Lussky said the boy had only a learner’s permit. No other people were involved with the accident, police said.

The injured teen was taken by Flight for Life helicopter to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
