School for autistic children may move to Hoffman Estates

A school for autistic children is one step closer to relocating to a Hoffman Estates commercial property.

The Hoffman Estates village board approved a request this week from the Chicago Education Project to operate its nonpublic special education facility in a building at 2353 Hassell Road.

A staff report on the proposed project states that the school — which is currently located on Remington Road in Schaumburg — serves more than 35 students. It is hoping to add students from a waiting list, bringing enrollment to 49 students with approximately the same number of staff members.

Assistant planner Josh Edwards said the school will take up the majority of the building. The building plans include seven classrooms. Offices would be placed close to the adjacent tenants to buffer noise from the classrooms.

The zoning code approval also included various student drop-off and pickup conditions to ensure neighboring tenants are not disrupted.

Edwards did not know when the school planned to open. No one from the Chicago Education Project could be reached prior to publication.
