Chemical leaks out of drum in Elk Grove Village

Hazardous materials crews were called to an Elk Grove Village business Friday afternoon after a worker driving a forklift clipped the bottom of a 55-gallon drum and caused a small chemical leak.

The leak occurred about 2 p.m. at Porreca Freight Inc., 77 Garlisch Drive, according to the Elk Grove Fire Department.

It’s unknown what type of chemical was being stored in the drum, but it was hazardous to breath, according to Lt. Michael Sharp, the department’s acting battalion chief.

Hazmat crews were able to mitigate the small spill by putting down an absorbent, until a hazmat cleanup company arrived after 5 p.m. to take care of the major cleanup work, Sharp said.

No injuries were reported.
