Boomers snap losing streak
CRESTWOOD, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers belted 3 home runs to put the brakes on a five-game losing streak and take down the West Division-leading Windy City ThunderBolts 5-3 in the opener of a series Sunday night.
Schaumburg has scored first in the last seven games, nabbing a 2-0 lead in the first on the strength of a 2-run homer from Chad Mozingo, the second batter of the game.
Windy City came back with two in the bottom half but couldn’t do much else against Boomers starting pitcher Cody Griebling. Griebling tossed 6 innings to win for the first time as a professional, striking out a season-high five.
Frank Pfister’s third-inning sacrifice fly put Schaumburg ahead for good at 3-2, but Griebling worked out a bases-loaded, no-out jam to preserve the lead.
Nick Kuroczko hit his first homer of the season in the seventh, and Steve McQuail drilled an eighth-inning solo homer. Patrick Mincey pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his 10th save. Mozingo and J.B. Brown logged 2 hits apiece.
