Boomers drop 10-7 slugfest

Steve McQuail blasted 2 solo home runs, but the Lake Erie Crushers offense was too much for the Schaumburg Boomers as they fell 10-7 on Wednesday at Boomers Stadium in front of a day-camp day crowd of 4,765, the second-largest crowd of the season.

Chad Mozingo’s 2-run double down the left-field line in the first inning scored Karexon Sanchez and Frank Pfister to put the Boomers on top early by a score of 2-1.

The double gave Mozingo his 16th and 17th two-out RBI on the season, extending his team lead in that department.

The Boomers could not hold on to the early advantage as Schaumburg surrendered 7 straight runs before scoring again on solo homers from Sean Mahley and McQuail in the sixth.

Lake Erie roughed up Shane Prance (1-1, 6.23) with the longball early, as the Crushers scored in each of the first four innings. Designated hitter Jason Taylor and right fielder Daniel Bowman each homered in the third inning, with Taylor adding another in the fourth, giving the Crushers an early 7-2 lead behind winning pitcher Trevor Longfellow (6-2, 4.04).

Prance lasted only 4 innings while, giving up 7 runs and striking out three.

Newly signed right-hander Tyler Ware relieved Prance in the fifth and pitched 3 innings of 1-run ball in his Boomers debut. McQuail belted another bomb to left-center in the eighth,

Mahley recorded his third 3three-hit game of the season, going 3-for-5 with 3 RBI as the team’s designated hitter while raising his average to .275.

The Boomers made it interesting in the ninth, scoring twice on a Mahley double, but Pfister could not push across any more runs as he snapped his franchise-record 15-game hitting streak with a flyout to center field to end the game.

The loss dropped the Boomers to 8-2 when the team has recorded multiple home runs in a game and to 33-21 overall.
