Boomers sweep CornBelters

The first-place Schaumburg Boomers completed their fifth series sweep in 10 chances at home in their inaugural season thanks to a 7-4 victory over the Normal CornBelters in Frontier League action Sunday afternoon.

The Boomers (32-19), who are 23-7 at home, fell behind early when the CornBelters broke through for 3 runs against all-star Cameron Roth in the third inning. But Roth retired the final nine batters he faced and allowed 6 hits over 6 innings to join Robby Donovan as the second Boomers starting pitcher to earn his sixth win.

Every Boomer reached base at least once as the offense rallied for 7 unanswered runs. The Boomers collected 13 hits, led by Chad Mozingo’s 3-for-4 performance. Mozingo scored twice and has reached base in 18 consecutive games.

Catcher Ty Nelson contributed a pair of hits, including his first career double, and Frank Pfister and Jereme Milons each added a pair of singles.

Boomers manager Jamie Bennett’s bullpen preserved the win. Joe Parsons worked a perfect seventh and lefty Sam Robinson retired the only man he faced in the eighth before Jason Braun was brought in. Braun breezed through the rest of the eighth but gave up a couple of hits and a run in the ninth before Adam Tollefson earned his earned his first save.

The Boomers host the Lake Erie Crushers today at 6:30 p.m. in the opener of a three-game series.
