LA Fitness in Schaumburg to close August 1

Barely half a year after changing from a Bally’s, the LA Fitness health club at 1020 N. Meacham Road in Schaumburg will close Aug. 1, members and employees learned this week.

Neither staff at the Schaumburg location nor anyone at the company’s corporate headquarters in Irvine, Calif. would comment on the closure Thursday. But village of Schaumburg staff speculated that the amount of competition in the area could have been a factor.

That competition will increase toward the end of the year when a 24-hour XSport Fitness opens about a block away, in the former Great Indoors building it will share with the PGA Tour Superstore at Golf and Meacham roads.

XSport Fitness will occupy a 45,000-square-foot area of the 136,000-square-foot building, and have some amenities that LA Fitness doesn’t, such as underground parking and a new swimming pool, Schaumburg Community Development Director Julie Fitzgerald said.

There are no pending proposals for the use of the LA Fitness site, she added. While the current building lends itself most readily to a health club type of use, the village also would be open to any redevelopment proposals for the site, Fitzgerald said.

Other health club facilities in the area include Lifetime Fitness on Higgins Road and several of the Schaumburg Park District’s locations, she said.
