This truly unique ranch home located on a half acre in unincorporated Palatine hearkens back to the time of hippies, Vietnam protests and artists like Peter Max. New ideas were running rampant in the country in 1968 and home designs were breaking new ground, too.

This contemporary-style U-shaped yellow brick home, with its charcoal gray granite accents and frame trim, would have been one of those groundbreaking designs with its largely enclosed front courtyard and spectacular fountain in front of the double doors.

The house, located within the Forest Estates subdivision, features four bedrooms, 2 baths, a slate foyer, a large living room/dining room combination, remodeled contemporary kitchen, family room with fireplace, laundry room and Florida room, all on the main level. The lower level boasts a bathroom, large game room, workroom and recreation room, as well as a crawl space for storage.

Listing agent Kathy Muno of Prudential American Heritage offers more details:

What is the hidden gem in this house?

"The courtyard with a dancing water feature that comes to life at night with multicolor lights, and the Zen feeling you get entering the courtyard."

What would your perfect buyer look like?

"Our perfect buyer would be someone who can appreciate a well-built custom contemporary home in a friendly, unique, convenient 'hidden' neighborhood."

What surprises you most about this house?

"The openness, the size and the closet space."

If this house were featured in a movie or TV show, which one would it be?

" 'Modern Family' "

What is the coolest thing about living in this neighborhood?

"The privacy you get from living on half-acre lots and the warmth of the neighbors. The nature you can enjoy and the feeling of being 'way out' but actually being only minutes from Woodfield (Mall) and Costco."

What is one adjective you'd use to describe this house?

"Zen."

Name three plants, flower or trees in the yard.

"Large beautiful hydrangeas in the courtyard, a black walnut tree and tons of perennials."
