Cops: Elgin man facing metal theft charges stole more metal

An Elgin man is accused of stealing more than 3,000 pounds of steel poles from a business less than two weeks after he was released on an earlier metal theft charge.

Police arrested Jonathon T. Peluso, 28, on June 6, alleging he was involved in the theft of metal products from the Mt. Hope Cemetery, 1001 Villa Street.

The theft occurred on May 19, according to police, but during the investigation Peluso was linked to the theft of steel pipes from a construction site near Grove and Kimball streets as well as the theft of a steel sewer grate from a construction site near Adams and Gertrude streets, police announced Thursday.

He was charged with four misdemeanor counts of theft in those cases, and was released the same day as his June 6 arrest, police said.

In the days following his release, Peluso was involved in the theft of more than 3,300 pounds of steel poles from a west Elgin business and the theft of 686 pounds of metal from an east Elgin business, according to police.

He was arrested again on June 15 and charged with two felony counts of theft.

He is being held at the Kane County jail in lieu of $60,000 bail.
