Glen Ellyn fire causes estimated $250,000 in damages

An apartment duplex fire in Glen Ellyn caused an estimated $250,000 in damages Saturday afternoon, a spokesman from the Lombard Fire Department said.

Firefighters received a call reporting that a duplex was on fire on Heather Lane at 4:55 p.m., said Battalion Chief Paul DiRienzo.

The fire is believed to have started on a rear porch at the north side of the duplex, he said. It spread throughout the majority of the duplex, causing extensive damage and completely destroying one side.

No injuries were reported.

“The Glen Ellyn building department was there, and (the residents) certainly cannot live in it for right now,” DiRienzo said.

DiRienzo said he did not know how many people escaped the duplex, but said that he believed there was more than one person, and that they were aided by the Glen Ellyn police department. Police officials did not provide further information.

The fire took about 30 minutes to get under control with the help of six other area departments, DiRienzo said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
