Streamwood church celebrates 50 years with Cardinal George

On Saturday, June 23, Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago, will celebrate the 4:30 p.m. Mass to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Streamwood.

The pastor, Father Ted Schmitt, and associate pastor, Father Piotr Gnoinski, will concelebrate the Mass with the Cardinal.

Two former pastors of St. John the Evangelist, Father Bob Tonelli (1992–2010) and Father Bill Moriarity (1985–1992), along with other priests who served as associate pastor at the parish will be in attendance at the Mass.

Also serving on the altar will be the parish’s newly ordained deacon, the Rev. Mr. Bob Pasdiora and the parish’s longest serving deacon, Rev. Mr. Earl Dahl.

The Knights of Columbus Council 12801 from St. John the Evangelist will provide an honor guard for the Cardinal during his visit to the parish.

A reception will follow the Mass in the Parish Center, where multiple presentations, including a Papal Blessing, will take place. Local officials, other dignitaries, and members of the Streamwood Historical Society will also make presentations in honor of the occasion.

The Cardinal’s visit will be the highlight of a year-long celebration that has included special blessings and events such as an alumni reunion. St. John’s will continue the anniversary celebration by hosting its first gala dinner and auction at The Seville banquets Oct. 27.

St. John the Evangelist is a Catholic parish of 2,825 families in Streamwood. The parish was established in June 1962 and has been supporting the Catholic community in the Streamwood area for 50 years.
