15-year-olds charged with murder in Elgin

Two 15-year-old Elgin teens have been charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of a 16-year-old last week. The teens were arrested last night on first-degree murder charges and are due in court this morning. Officers found Nestor Alvarado in a vehicle with a single gunshot wound to the chest Thursday night after a gang-related altercation, police said. Full story.

RTA survey shows riders pleased with public transportation

The results of a $435,000 survey that took three years to generate are in, and the majority of Metra, Pace and CTA riders are satisfied with the services. A total of 83 percent of riders called themselves satisfied or very satisfied, while more than 90 percent said they would recommend the transit system. Among the gripes were lack of parking and coordination of schedules for transfers. Full story.

Ray LaHood applauds Navistar’s energy efficiency

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood toured Lisle’s Navistar International Corp. Monday and praised the truck maker for complying with new fuel efficiency standards. LaHood called the company a leader in fuel efficiency engineering. Navistar launched a natural gas-powered truck line earlier this year, which was of interest to LaHood. Full story.

Man suspected in 2 suburban bank robberies

The FBI is searching for a suspect who robbed an Elmhurst bank Monday morning, and is believed to be the same man who robbed a Bensenville bank in early April. The suspect passed a note to the teller at the Inland Bank and Trust on South Spring Road at about 10 a.m. Monday, but no weapon was ever displayed and no one was injured, according to police. Texan charged with stealing equipment from Naperville company

A Texas man is accused of stealing $157,000 in industrial grade equipment from a Naperville company he was contracted to work for. The Houston man appeared in court Monday and was released after posting a $10,000 cash bond. Hai V. Pham, 51, is accused of stealing more than a dozen circuit packs and hard drives from Lucent Technologies before leaving the area. Full story.

Dundee Road has been shut down between Algonquin Road and Hawthorn Road/Old Dundee Road in Barrington Hills due to a rollover accident with injuries. Reconstruction and widening of Walkup Road from Route 176 to Burning Bush Trail in Crystal Lake continues. People can expect delays there until November. Full story.

Report: Cubs sign Cuban prospect

The Cubs made a splash yesterday by winning the bidding war on highly touted Cuban outfield Jorge Soler. Reports have the deal worth $30 million over nine years, but Solder could opt for salary arbitration at a point during the contract. Soler is a power hitter projected as a right fielder. While playing for the Cuban National Team in the 2010 World Junior Baseball Championship, he hit .304 with an on-base percentage of .500. Full story.

Kings become first 8 seed to win Stanley Cup

The Los Angeles Kings won the Stanley Cup last night for the first time in the franchise’s 45-year history, and became the first eighth-seeded playoff team to win the league title. Goalie Jonathan Quick was named playoff MVP after the team’s 6-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils last night. Quick allowed just seven goals in the six-game series. Full story.
