After the record-setting hot weekend — with it reaching 95 yesterday and 97 Sunday — how about a nice, cool 82 today? Not enough? OK, how about a high in just the mid-60s on Wednesday and low 60s Thursday? Go ahead and enjoy it; you deserve it. As the sun rose today it was 73 degrees with a few clouds. Full story.

10-year-old boy drowns in Montgomery

Police might release the name today of a 10-year-boy pronounced dead Sunday after being pulled from Jericho Lake in Montgomery. He apparently was swimming with his siblings. Fox Valley Park District Police are investigating the death in conjunction with other agencies. The name of the boy was still being withheld yesterday. Full story.

Motorcyclist killed in Geneva rear-end crash

A motorcyclist was killed Monday in a crash at a Geneva intersection. The rider’s family has been notified, but authorities have not yet released the victim’s name. The Memorial Day fatality happened at 6:42 p.m. when a Honda motorcycle traveling north on Randall Road crashed into the rear end of a Chevy sport utility vehicle at Gleneagle Drive. No charges are expected, police Cmdr. Julie Nash said. Full story.

Mount Prospect police investigating domestic shooting

Charges are pending while Mount Prospect police investigate a shooting involving two brothers that put one in the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Officers arrived at a home on South Hatlen Avenue at roughly 5:09 a.m. Monday after getting a call from the 40-year-old homeowner about forcible entry. The man told police he was having a dispute with his adult brother, police said in a news release. Full story.

No injuries after two Geneva houses catch fire

No one was injured in a pair of house fires that happened about eight blocks and an hour apart yesterday evening in Geneva, firefighters said. Crews responded to the 200 block of South Harrison Street for the first call shortly before 5 p.m. Geneva Fire Lt. Kevin Forest said a deck and siding at a two-story duplex had caught fire, and a neighbor was trying to douse the flames with a garden hose. About an hour later, at 6:05 p.m., firefighters were called to a two-story house on the 100 block of Wall Street for a fire in an upstairs bedroom. Full story.

Plan prompted by Elgin school stabbing heads for House vote

The Illinois House in the coming days could discuss a plan to prevent school violence that was prompted by an Elgin case in which a teacher was stabbed. The plan was approved by a House committee yesterday and will head to the full House for further discussion. Only House approval stands between the legislation and Gov. Pat Quinn’s desk. Full story.

Theo talks, Cubs listen at least for a day

Cubs bosses Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer felt compelled to meet the media on Memorial Day at Wrigley Field, and a 12-game losing streak, and its attendant questions, brought out double-barrel interviews. Maybe they should talk more often, Bruce Miles writes. The Cubs’ offense awoke from its slumber with 14 hits, including 4 homers, to beat the San Diego Padres 11-7 and break the losing streak. Meanwhile, Epstein is keeping the focus on the long term. “This is a very difficult period to get through, but at the same time it’s important to stay disciplined and take a step back, too, and realize that what we’re trying to accomplish here requires some time and some changes and some growth as an organization.” Full story.

Kirk’s ex files complaint:

According to media reports, Kimberly Vertolli, the ex-wife of Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk of Highland Park, filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission last year, alleging Kirk and his then-girlfriend violatied campaign finance law.

Traffic

Traffic on Chicago-area highways is moving slowly this morning. Delays are being reported on the Kennedy Expressway, the Edens Expressway and the Stevenson Expressway. An accident on the eastbound side of the Reagan Tollway at York Road was helping to slow motorists there. In Graylsake, Center Street is closed west of Route 83 at the railroad tracks.
