Mount Prospect police investigating domestic shooting

Mount Prospect police are investigating an early morning shooting involving two brothers that put one in the hospital with non life-threatening injuries, police said Monday afternoon.

Charges are pending, police said.

Officers arrived at a home on the 0 to 100 block of South Hatlen Avenue at roughly 5:09 a.m. after getting a call from the 40-year-old homeowner about forcible entry.

The man told police he was having a dispute with his adult brother, police said in a news release.

Police said the dispute “escalated” and one of the brothers fired a handgun twice with one round striking the other brother in the leg.

It is unclear if the victim, who was taken to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, has since been treated and released, police said.

Officials would not say which brother was injured and said it would take a few days before charges are filed.

“We don’t know which direction the criminal investigation is going to go,” Mount Prospect Police Deputy Chief Tim Janowick said. “We have not had the state’s attorney involved yet because of some medical issues.”

Police have been called to the home on previous occasions, though Janowick could not say whether the calls were violent in nature.

Janowick said investigators will be interviewing family members, but wanted neighbors who were concerned to rest assured that this was an isolated incident.

“This was a domestic-related incident,” he said. “It’s not something that was a random or other criminal act.”
