Couch fire causes Streamwood apartment evacuation
No one was injured in a Saturday morning apartment fire that ignited in a Streamwood couch.
Firefighters responded to the alarm at 10:49 a.m. at the apartment complex at 5021 Valley Lane and found smoke rising from the fourth floor.
Battalion Chief Jeff Swanson said the fire was caused by a lit candle that was hanging about the couch in a fourth floor unit.
“The resident was in a backroom and came back to the living room to discover the fire,” Swanson said. “The building’s fire sprinkler system was able to extinguish the fire before it got out of control.”
Fire damage was limited to the unit but a total of 10 units in the complex are uninhabitable because of water damage from the sprinklers and smoke, he said.
Swanson said damage is estimated at about $200,000.
