Addison police warn residents of possible door-to-door fraud
Addison officials say they’ve received reports this week of representatives of an energy company going door-to-door making potentially fraudulent claims.
Village officials said a company called IGS Energy has been attempting to sign up residents for electrical service, sometimes indicating it was chosen as Addison’s electricity supply company
But that isn’t true, officials said Friday.
Instead, voters from 17 DuPage County towns, including Addison, gave their governments permission in March to shop around for energy suppliers other than ComEd. Addison signed a contract with Integrys Energy Services. But officials said Integrys will not be visiting residents at their homes, and any communications from Integrys will come in the mail.
In addition, IGS Energy did not receive a solicitor permit from Addison, and officials said vendors should not be attempting to sign up residents door-to-door.
Village staff notified the Illinois Commerce Commission as well as the attorney general’s Consumer Fraud Division. In addition, Addison police have contacted Choice Markets, the soliciting company for IGS, asking them to pull their representatives from within Addison or to go through the proper permitting process.
“We understand that IGS is a legitimate energy provider, and our residents can choose any company they wish,” Village Manager Joseph Block said in a statement. “Our concern is that the solicitors representing IGS are putting out false information and confusing residents, especially senior citizens.”
Residents who receive a visit from IGS at their home are asked to call Addison police at (630) 543-3080.
