Palatine's Little City launches Going Green Initiative

The Little City Foundation is working to reduce its carbon footprint while also educating staff and the children and adults it serves.

The Palatine-based agency, which serves people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, rolled out its Going Green Initiative just in time for Earth Day.

The eco-friendly changes being made throughout the 56-acre campus include trading in light bulbs for tube fluorescent bulbs, reducing energy usage by 75 percent. All exterior lighting is operated by timers, and shower heads are now energy-saving models.

Little City also is advancing its agencywide composting and recycling program. Composting on a small-scale began more than three years ago, creating enough compost to use in three accessible gardens in Little City's Horticulture Center.

“It is important for us to make sure that everyone at Little City has the opportunity to participate in this exciting going green venture,” Executive Director Shawn Jeffers said in a statement. “We are strategically planning ways to get the children, students, adults and staff at Little City involved.”

Other projects will be implemented in the future, with the agency aiming to change its entire culture toward environmental sustainability.
