Elgin Marine’s body arrives Friday

The body of an Elgin Marine killed in Afghanistan last week will arrive home on Friday, and those who want to show their support are encouraged to gather that afternoon in Elgin, officials said.

Cpl. Alex Martinez’s body is expected to arrive, with a Patriot Guard Riders escort, at the Laird Funeral Home in Elgin at about 2 p.m., Elgin Police Cmdr. Glenn Theriault said.

People can gather on Douglas Street in downtown Elgin or at Festival Park, Theriault said.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at Laird, 310 S. State St. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Life Changers International Church, 2500 Beverly Road, Hoffman Estates.

A previously advertised recognition ceremony to be held at the Elgin City Council meeting tonight was postponed at the request of Martinez’s widow, Julianna, Theriault said.

Martinez was killed during combat operations in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province.
