St. Peter students earn high academic accolades

It was a grueling triathlon with intense training and preparation, but no running shoes were required for the “Academic Triathlon” competition that took place recently for 10 private schools at Walther Lutheran High School in Chicago.

St. Peter Lutheran School's fifth- through eighth-grade students competed in the scholarly event and earned “Overall Champion” title in social studies, along with winning high honors in math.

“We are so proud of our students and their achievements that resulted from this competition,” said St. Peter Principal Bruce Rudi. “Our teachers foster a thirst for learning in the classroom, and we're thrilled and honored to see our students carry that on with their academics.”

Winners were: Overall school champion in social studies, St. Peter Lutheran/Arlington Heights; Overall fifth grade champion in social studies and math, St. Peter Lutheran/Arlington Heights; Top eighth-grade medal and overall champion medal in social studies, Nick Wagner; Top fifth-grade math award went to (tie) Collin Ceryance and Nicholas Pagones; Top fifth-grade award in social studies, Collin Ceryance.

Forty-one students received place awards in the area of math and social studies.

A complete listing of achievements from the Walther High School Academic Triathlon follows:

Math competition: First place, Eric Hoffman, eighth grade; Matthew Jo, seventh grade; Marcus Engstrom, sixth grade;

Collin Ceryance, Grade Level Medal, fifth grade.

Second place: Travis Gates and Connor Irelan, eighth grade; Matthew Hoffman and Kaleb Scharman, seventh grade; Tim Antonetti, sixth grade; Nick Pagones and Diana Spulber, fifth grade.

Third place: James Knea and Kevin Orton, eighth grade; Jake Ringstrand, seventh grade; David Engstrom, Ava Rukstales and Jonathan Witte, sixth grade; Jessica Hegel, Peter Hiller and Jackson Woods, fifth grade.

Fourth place: Emmie Herrmann, seventh grade.

Social studies competition winners were:

First place: Nicholas Wagner, Top Overall Medal and Grade Level Medal, eighth grade; Matthew Hoffman, seventh grade; Tim Antonetti, sixth grade.

Nicholas Pagones, Grade Level Medal and Collin Ceryance, Grade Level Medal, fifth grade.

Second place: Matthew Jo, seventh grade; Kayleigh Padar and Gracie Scannell, sixth grade; Neal Bergman, Joshua Froehling and Peter Hiller, fifth grade.

Third place: Nicholas Scott, eighth grade; Daniel Langguth and Michael Lukyanovskiy, seventh grade; Daniel Langguth and Michael Lukyanovskiy, sixth grade; Morgan Bolger Jackson Harmon, Jessica Hegel and Amanda Stickels, fifth grade.
