Person killed in fiery Warrenville crash

Warrenville police are investigating a fiery one-car crash on Diehl Road west of Winfield Road this morning that left one person dead.

Police are withholding identification of the victim pending notification of the family. Because of the extreme heat generated by the fire, the DuPage County Coroner’s office must complete its investigation before confirming the vehicle was occupied by only one person, police said.

Authorities said officers arrived at the crash scene about 2:52 a.m. to find the vehicle fully engulfed in flames. It appears the vehicle had left the roadway and struck an above ground gas line, causing the fire.

NICOR personnel shut off the gas line, police said, while Warrenville Fire Protection District personnel stood by to ensure flames did not spread before being extinguished.

Diehl Road will remain closed between Raymond Drive and Winfield Road until the police department completes the on-scene portion of their investigation, police said.
