Pedestrian dies after being hit by semi in Elgin

A pedestrian died Wednesday morning after being struck by a semitrailer truck on Big Timber Road near the intersection of Hillcrest Drive in Elgin.

Elgin Police Lt. Dan O’Shea said a 31-year-old Elgin man was taken to Sherman Hospital with severe injuries and died a short time after the 10 a.m. crash.

Police said the man was walking north across Big Timber Road and was hit by the trailer portion of the truck, which was traveling east. There are no sidewalks or crosswalks in that area.

The truck’s driver, a 47-year-old man from Carol Stream, was not injured, O’Shea said.

Big Timber Road was closed between Route 31 and McLean Boulevard for more than two hours as an investigation team reconstructed the accident, O’Shea said. State police inspected the truck as part of the investigation and it was later released to the company, O’Shea said.

The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
