Is new Walgreens safe for Batavia?

Is the current proposal for a new Walgreens a move in the right direction for Batavia?

Wilson Street in Batavia has been referred to as the “spine of our city.” It is the main thoroughfare connecting the east and west sides. Traffic congestion at several points along Wilson Street at peak times has been problematic. Our downtown must feel safe if we want it to thrive.

Public health and safety is of primary importance. Downtown streets need to be designed to accommodate pedestrians, bikers, and motorists, as well as to avoid excessive traffic congestion to allow emergency vehicles to pass when needed.

If the proposed plan is approved by the city, a new larger Walgreens, selling additional items including produce and liquor, will be built on the former Prairie Path Cycles. A large setback is proposed to allow for a drive-through and parking in front. Traffic will be entering from Wilson Street into the plaza. As cars wait to turn left into the parking lot, there is a potential for traffic congestion. In addition there will be cars pulling out of parking spaces, and cars coming out of the drive-through to exit back onto Wilson Street. Currently, this is a primary thoroughfare for pedestrians walking to McDonald’s and to the riverwalk.

There are many conflicting points between pedestrians, motorists and bikers in this current plan. A traffic study is needed to determine is this is a safe plan for our downtown.
