Carp nets a good idea in Illinois
In regard to the recently published article, “Supreme court won’t get Involved in carp fight,” I would like to voice my support of Michigan’s proposal to build nets in Illinois’ Calumet rivers.
I understand the U.S. government’s desire to create a long-term solution in order to prevent the spread of Asian carp into the Great lakes. Yet, after already waiting two years for this “solution,” I doubt federal agencies are considering the deleterious effects of their procrastination.
Were these Asian carp to reach and invade the Great Lakes, they would undoubtedly compete with, and perhaps endanger, species endemic to the Lakes.
With the Lakes’ biodiversity already waning in the last several decades, this unwarranted invasion will exacerbate the trend and lead to significant damages to the fishing industry.
Although the U.S. posits that nets may cause flooding, testing the nets on a smaller scale with routine checks before significant rainfall, may prevent this unwanted side effect.
Success in such trials could temporarily stop carp migration until a long-term solution can be reached.
